Biking Season! (And Safety)

Spring finally arrived a couple weeks ago and the kids were psyched to get their bikes together. They’ve already tuned theirs up and have been riding all over. I was set to get mine ready to go for this weekend, but AB inevitably happened…

But rainy days pass. Eventually. What’s important is to proactively prep, learn some lessons while you wait it out, and practice skills where you can.

And when it’s not super wet, the two things I annoy everyone with when riding a bike, skateboard, scooter, or anything else are: active transportation is very important, and Be Safe.

Which includes the main number one rule: Wear. A. Helmet.

With the rise of escooters, ebikes, and generally people riding around with poor or outright dangerous habits, there’s also been an increase in serious injury. There’s definitely examples of good riders out there, but every town in this country has its questionable bike people, and the lesson overall is: don’t be like them.

Because as I was told often, and as physicians and neurologists tell everyone:

“We can regrow or replace almost anything in your body, except your brain.”

Besides that, the spray park was open before the current chilly rains, and the kids got to take their bikes. And previously in the week, Mini-me K also seriously started to use his Strider bike, and he’s almost got it down! Except for his first scraped knee on baba’s driveway. Aww.

I’d also be remiss to not have a shout out to AB’s bike trails, urban and rural, that are widely recognized for their beautiful scenery and if you want it, challenging terrain. But also due to ongoing work by municipalities, in-town trails are an increasingly easy way to get around. Take a look at some of the most densely populated, top cities in the world, and most have healthy bike infrastructure. Yes, even in winter cities.

With that said, I can’t wait to get out for a ride, in the city and out.

So, be mindful out there, be aware of surroundings and hazards when you’re out, and really, enjoy the ride.
