What a coincidence! The second post on a dad blog is about moms and how we relate to them.
Like my mom and her mom and her mom before that, I grew up around some strong, stubborn, get-things-done type of women, most of them moms. Much like a lot of Alberta (and let’s face it Canuck in general) moms.
As an adult, I’ve dated more than a few AB moms and it shows how that character’s carried on. Strong women, independent ones able to think and make and do what’s needed. That of course now includes L, the mom of the 3 crazy boys in our particular unit: M, B, and K.

Of course they’re not some singular hive mind of Alberta moms, but there’s definitely shared characteristics. I don’t envy them the job. So I do acknowledge and do my part. Give foot rubs and compliments. See their softer sides. Reduce the exhausted looks. The tired, worn out, I’ve-done-laundry-for-10-hours-straight stares.
Looking around the park today and most days in the city and beyond, there’s also plenty of new AB families. The moms chasing their kids, talking about their soccer matches, and complaining about weather, for some too hot, some too cold. All of them making it work, much like my great-great baba before them.

My appreciation for my mother, for L, and others like them knows no bounds. I don’t limit showing it to just one day or one weekend. It’s part of being here, being present as a dad and a partner, being the best PBD because of it.
