Summer 2026 Review

At the end of September, even!

Because we all know that August passes by far too quick and September school and everything else rolls in whether we’re ready or not. That, and I’ve been working on trying to get a side project done these past months… if ya know ya know.

It was not a perfect season. In a more tumultuous summer than I think we’ve had since COVID at least. Weatherwise, culturewise, provincewise. But despite hangups and lots of whining, both legitimate (from kids and some upset vacation adults) to not (certain percentages of the province), there were several trips, events, and even good times had.

But sometimes you get a perfect family trip moment, like your toddler lightly microwaving your keys while trying to pack up and check out, along with the key fob. The kind you need to enable your starter. Thus stranding you in the middle of BC.

Thankfully, mobile locksmiths and understanding hotel staff exist and we got it sorted. After a few days. Shoutouts to Mobile Key Services and Best Western Sicamous!

And somehow that was only start of a series of other events that would lead us all over the place in misadventures (fires, road closures, dead car batteries, pools with terrible public swim hours, frickin’ mosquitos). Which in turn only made up 10 days or so of the summer.

There were other things though, between the floods and tiny bloodsuckers. PBD’s solo trip to Halifax and area. Weenie roasts at baba and gido’s. The 14 year old getting his Learner’s permit first try and practicing on the road (terrifying!). FRINGE Fest! Lots of slushies.

The first half wasn’t a summer. The second half was a lot of trials dotted with good stuff and the occasional long, warm night filled with music. I lost my cool more than a few times, but not when it counted, which is what I think is called “growth”. The kids showed me things, the partners showed up and supported each other as best we could.

It was not perfect. Not as some might define it. But I think it was for me, and I hope for those in my life.
