Ice Cream – Made By Marcus

Wow, another ice cream joint so soon? I’d say it’s because of summer, but really because the next few weeks will be stacked with other family/seasonal fun.

Marcus made his start in Calgary, but we won’t hold that against him. With a staggering 5 locations in that city and 3 in Edmonton, it’s an impressive creamery. Bespoke artisanal ice cream definitely has found a place all over the two cities, but MbM is definitely the more… culinary of them all. You know, for the sort of people that love to use the words “flavour profile”, or “bespoke ice cream.”

Besides their very, very good base flavours, that use all sorts of fancy ingredients and collaborations with other food businesses, they come up with some very, very hit or miss combinations throughout the year as well.

The kids in the fam don’t hit this parlor all that often, but for me and partner C, we’re here at least once a month. We usually tend to inhale the Marcona Almond Ganache and the Malted Chocolate Honeycomb, and have definitely been surprised by the Cinnamon Snickerdoodle (vegan, even).

Partner V when they are so totally forced to go with me tends to try the more exotic fruit-based concoctions, and L keeps meaning to try their fantastic looking sundaes. The kids generally share what we have, or maybe grab Salted Caramel or Double Cookies and Cream. When they’re allowed.

And once in a blue moon, the monthly flavour is the ridiculous combination of Coffee And Cuban Cigar with chocolate bits (and sometimes Tequila). Some fever combination that hits all of the legal drug vices all at once.

Add to that their fridges where they store ice cream cakes to rival *that* massive corporation, along with ice cream bar versions of some of their best flavours, and it’s hard not to keep coming back. Even if someone in the food lab keeps insisting on adding things like anise and pine.

We’ll break away from the bigger cities soon enough as stands and other towns pop up their scoopy locations for the summer, and probably into the fall. Stay tuned!
